Oil Infusing Method using Stove

  • Verify the Root Use Soul Ascentials Black Cohosh Root (Actaea racemosa), or root whose label names the botanical. Don’t substitute Asian Actaea species sold under the same common name — a documented adulterant.
  • Measure the Root Put dried root into a heat-safe pot, leaving 1-3 inches of headspace for the oil.
  • Combine Root and Oil Add carrier oil to cover the root by at least 1 inch and stir to wet all of it.
  • Warm in a Water Bath Set the pot inside a larger pot of water on an electric burner — never a direct gas flame — and hold it at a gentle 100-140°F.
  • Hold the Heat Hold that low water-bath heat 1-5 hours, until the oil takes on the root’s color and scent.
  • Strain the Oil Once cooled, strain through cheesecloth or a mesh strainer into a clean bowl, pressing out the last of the oil.
  • Bottle and Label Pour into sterilized bottles, seal, and mark with the date. External use only — patch test on your inner forearm 24 hours before wider use.
DOUBLE BOILER- Using a heatproof mixing bowl on top of a pot of simmering water is one of the most common double boiler substitutes. When using this method, make sure there is enough space between the mixing bowl and the simmering water. The bowl should not be in contact with the water.
