  • Verify the Root Use Soul Ascentials Black Cohosh Root (Actaea racemosa), or root whose label names the botanical. Don’t substitute Asian Actaea species sold under the same common name — a documented adulterant.
  • Measure the Root Place 1-3 Tbsp of dried Black Cohosh Root into a small saucepan or pot.
  • Start with Cool Water Cover the root with 1 quart (about 4 cups) of cold spring water.
  • Bring to a Gentle Simmer Bring the water to a simmer over medium heat, uncovered, watching for the first small bubbles.
  • Simmer the Root Cover the pot and simmer gently 20-45 minutes, until the liquid turns a deep reddish-brown.
  • Strain the Brew Strain into a quart jar or cup through a fine mesh strainer, pressing the spent root lightly.
  • Serve and Store Drink warm; check with a doctor first if pregnant, nursing, or on medication. Refrigerate leftovers, use within 2 days.
