Keyword: healing, poultice, salve

Ingredients

  • Acorus Root Blended/Powder
  • Spring Water
  • coconut Oil Optional
  • Natural Clay (bentonite clay) Optional
  • Activated Charcoal Optional

Equipment

  • Muslin
  • Pestle & Mortar
  • Blender

Method

  • Verify the Root Use Soul Ascentials Calamus Root (Acorus calamus), or properly identified dried rhizome from a trusted source. Beta-asarone content varies widely by origin, so never substitute an unlabeled or wild-foraged root for internal use.
  • Patch Test First Before your first use, mix a little powder with warm water, dab it on the inner forearm, and wait 24 hours for any redness or irritation.
  • Measure the Root Spoon out enough powdered calamus root to fill your palm and break up any clumps so it wets evenly.
  • Mix to a Paste Stir in hot spring water a little at a time until it forms a thick, spreadable paste, then let it cool to warm before touching skin.
  • Spread on the Cloth Spread the warm paste in a thin, even layer across the center of a clean cotton or muslin cloth.
  • Apply and Wrap Lay the paste side against clean, unbroken skin and wrap loosely to hold it in place; never apply it over broken or irritated skin.
  • Remove and Rinse Remove after up to 15 minutes, or sooner if it stings, rinse the skin with cool water, and discard the used poultice — do not reuse it.

Fresh roots

  • Chop roots (scissors) and crush the roots using Pestle and Mortor.
  • Add a little water to create a pulp or paste
  • Can add Oil / Clay / Charcoal to thicken Paste (optional)

Dry Roots

  • Put dry roots in blender
  • Blend on high and add a freshly boiled water to create a paste
  • May also add coconut oil / clay / Activated Charcoal
  • Spread the herb paste onto a layer of muslin that is twice the size of the area of skin to be treated. Like a sandwich, fold the muslin over the herb.

Application

  • Apply the muslin with the herb paste directly to the affected area, tie with muslin strips, leave on for 30 minutes or more. Change and repeat if needed.
  • You can r use these poultices fresh or store them in your freezer.
  • Place a piece of wax paper between each poultice when freezing to make it easier to separate them later. Put your poultices in a plastic gallon freezer bag to keep them safe.
